It’s interesting to consider that half a century ago, I had some things somewhat comparable to this rather over-the-top survivalist, stashed in the trunk of my car. I always kept there a ready-to-go backpack, plus additional food and a small firearm. In one sense, Fran and I still maintain this readiness with our backpacking and gardening and striving towards simplicity. But there is a significant difference. My attitude toward all this has changed, and we now work toward independence and freedom in a context/environment that is more community based.
